Welcome to
Predator Free Te Kamo
Te Kamo is the next Whangārei suburb to join the national Predator Free movement, with a community vision to remove introduced predators and invasive weeds from our city.
Tiakina Whangārei is excited to help establish this project in mid-2023, following the successes of the other community projects.

Why Te Kamo?
Te Kamo was identified as a key location to protect as it borders the Pukenui Forest, an important habitat for many of our native flora and fauna. It is also home to several native forest pockets, which act as suburban havens for our native species. Conservation outcomes here would mean improved biodiversity outcomes throughout the Pukenui Forest.
Te Kamo is a tight-knit community with many passionate environmentalists already active in conservation initiatives.

What’s happening in Te Kamo?
There is a newly established Pest-Free Kamo volunteer group looking for new members! Possum traps and rat bait stations have successfully ring-fenced Fairway Drive and Granfield Reserve native bush areas and the group is continually monitoring and maintaining the area.
The Pest-Free Kamo group is also pulling out invasive weeds in the area, targeting species such as wild ginger, asparagus fern, queen of the night, woolly nightshade, tuber ladder fern, bangalow palm, Taiwan cherry and wandering dew.
Heather Pomfrett has already noticed more wildlife in her area and you can, too! If you’re keen to get involved, fill in the below form and we will be in touch!
How will we know if it’s working?
If everyone has a trap and removes invasive weeds from their backyard, and we tackle public spaces together as a community, Te Kamo could become a predator-free suburb!
Support from Tiakina Whangārei will include regular monitoring to ensure increased biodiversity. It’s important to record all traps and catches on Trap NZ to ensure predator control coverage.
We know we’re doing it right when:
- Local schools and businesses are involved
- A great community spirit feel
- More fruit on your trees in your backyard (not being eaten by pests)
- Less invasive weeds in your backyard and in public spaces
- Native plants start to flourish (they’re not being ravaged by pests)
- Birdlife and birdsong increase (rats stop eating their eggs)
- You and your neighbours have backyard traps
We’re keen to hear from you!
