Get Involved

There are many ways that Tiakina Whangārei can work towards its goal to become Predator Free – but we need your help!

It’s our project’s kaupapa that our community should have a large input into what is done. Ultimately, we would like to support any initiative that meets the aims of Tiakina Whangārei. For example, in the future we will be providing support for community pest plant control and re-vegetation projects. If you have an idea for a potential project, please get in touch so we can start a conversation.

Why Start with Predator Control?

Introduced mammalian pests have been repeatedly shown to threaten native biodiversity. Reducing pests will not only help protect native flora and fauna, but also reduce the number of your grapefruit and oranges that are taken by possums!

Join Us Today!

  1. Maintain a trap in your backyard
  2. Record your catches on TrapNZ
  3. Volunteer at an existing project
  4. Become a Community Lead
  5. Start your own trapping project

Use TrapNZ so we know our efforts are working!

If everyone has a trap in their backyard and we tackle public spaces together as a community, we will be well on our way to being the first suburb in Whangārei to be predator free! It’s so important to record all traps and catches on Trap NZ to ensure predator control coverage. It’s super easy to do! Here are some instructions to use both the TrapNZ website and the mobile app. We know we’re doing it right when:
  • Local schools and businesses are involved
  • A great community spirit feel
  • More fruit on your trees in your backyard (not being eating by pests)
  • Native plants start to flourish (they’re not bring ravaged by pests)
  • Birdlife and birdsong increase (rats stop eating their eggs)
  • You and your neighbours have backyard traps
